Research Assistant

The focus of my research has been mental health promotion and workplace health promotion with duties including:

Research – Quantitative data gathering including scoping and rapid reviews of peer-reviewed and grey literature evidence and policies, qualitative data gathering including interviews with policy makers and service providers, appraising and synthesising evidence.

Report preparation – Developing and adhering to work plans, writing report narratives, composing PowerPoint presentations and project milestone briefs for stakeholder committees, meeting aggressive deadlines.

Consultation and collaboration with stakeholders – Strong and targeted communication and knowledge translation skills and thorough, comprehensive understanding of health promotion concepts and principles to ensure meaningful: interviews with stakeholder representatives, study participants and international leaders in Mental Health Promotion; committee progress meetings and dissemination of findings to stakeholders; NGO and other intersectoral committee meetings; collaboration with information technology and design teams to translate content to website platforms; camaraderie and teamwork with University research staff and client stakeholders.

Teaching Assistant

Duties include preparing Powerpoint presentations, delivering online and in-person lectures, facilitating online and in-person group tutorials, grading papers, liaising with students and ensuring their needs are met, supervising undergraduate and post-graduate dissertations, creating and editing online learning materials. These duties were carried out under the following programmes offered by the University of Galway:

MA Health Promotion – Determinants of Health Module (exploring the wider impacts of biological, psychological, social, environmental and ecological determinants on individual and population health through the lens of equity, public health policy and community participation) & Supportive Environments Module (exploring the workplace as a setting to create and nurture wellbeing). With teaching under various other modules in the Masters programme.

Post Graduate Diplomas – Workplace Wellness (exploring the workplace as a setting to create and support wellbeing emphasising the importance of multi- component strategies to enhance organisational culture) & Mental Health Promotion (strengthening protective factors for population mental health with an emphasis on equitable, whole-of-society approaches).

MS Occupational Health – Workplace Health Promotion (comparing/contrasting WPHP concepts with Occupational Health and Safety and discussing multi-component approaches to workplace wellbeing).

Undergraduate-level Medical School – Health and Society Module (broadening the medical paradigm to consider biopsychosocial and socio-ecological models of health and the influence of social determinants and societal structure on population health and health behaviours).
